Although often thought of as just another popular trend, in-floor heating (also known as radiant floor heating) has been around since Roman times. Our team has plenty of experience installing hydronic radiant heating systems in people’s homes.
There are other benefits to in-floor heating beyond making it easier to get out of bed in the morning. But is in-floor heating right for your home?
Hydronic radiant heating consists of tubing placed underneath your floors. Your boiler then sends heated water through the tubes, which heats the space above.
In general, in-floor heating is much more energy efficient than a traditional radiator. That’s because radiant heating systems can heat an entire room at once. Your radiator has to work extra hard to heat the air closest to it before it can heat the rest of the room, resulting in hot spots, cold spots, and a general lack of efficiency. In-floor heating systems heat a room evenly at a much lower temperature, wasting less energy in the process.
Heated floors make sense with cold-to-the-touch materials like hardwood and tile, but what if you have carpeted floors? The truth is that in-floor heating systems work well with most flooring materials, regardless if you have laminate, vinyl, or even carpeted floors.
The key is to make sure whatever material you’re using for your floors doesn’t insulate the heat from your system and prevent it from rising into the room properly. Some carpets or padding are too thick and will decrease the effectiveness of your system. Our experienced installation teams can help you determine what materials work best over your in-floor heating system.
When choosing how to heat your home, health issues may not cross your mind. However, radiant floor heating comes with real health benefits that may be important for your family.
For example, in-floor systems are great for people who suffer from severe allergies. Traditional heating systems rely on fans and ducts, inevitably pushing dust and allergens throughout the air. By choosing radiant floor heating, you can prevent excessive amounts of dust or other allergens from circulating in the air.
The great part about in-floor heating is that, if you’re unsure about committing to a system for your entire house, you can choose to install it in a single room. Many people only install systems in areas that are prone to uncomfortable cold spots — the bathroom, for example, or a mudroom.
Although in-floor heating can be expensive to install, we believe that this investment ends up paying for itself over time. With a more energy efficient system — not to mention the additional appeal if you choose to sell your home — we think you’ll agree that this “luxury” simply makes sense.
